Portrait of Misery's Madame

The Madame

Every lantern has a keeper.

Come Sit Awhile

A Letter From The Madame

Most people know me as Misery's Madame.

But the woman behind the lantern is simply Candy.

Like many people, I've walked through seasons that changed me forever.

I know what it's like to carry things no one else can see.

For a long time, I carried them quietly.

Until one day I realized...

Even the strongest souls deserve a place to rest.

That place became the water.

That place became the swamp.

And eventually...

It became Misery's Madame.

If you've found your way here,

I hope you stay awhile.

You're welcome beside my fire.

Why I Built This Place

There was a time when I wished a place like this already existed.

A place where no one expected me to have all the answers.

A place where I didn't have to pretend to be strong every moment of every day.

Somewhere I could simply breathe.

Somewhere I could sit beside the water and remember who I was beneath everything I had been carrying.

I couldn't find that place...

So I decided to build it.

If this little corner of the swamp helps even one weary soul feel seen, understood, or a little less alone...

Then every step that brought me here was worth it.

Why the Crows Stay

People often ask why the crows are always with me.

The answer isn't found in folklore.

It's found in my life.

During one of the darkest seasons I ever lived through, a crow appeared.

To many, it would have been just another bird.

To me...

It became a quiet reminder that even the longest storms eventually come to an end.

Ever since then, I have never looked at a crow the same way.

Around here, they are not symbols of fear.

They are reminders that freedom can arrive when we least expect it.

Meet Romeo

Romeo

Most people see a snake and immediately feel fear.

I see Romeo.

He's gentle.

He's curious.

He enjoys quiet moments and, believe it or not...

He even likes to snuggle.

Romeo reminds me every day that the world doesn't always see things as they truly are.

Sometimes what we're taught to fear is simply waiting for someone willing to understand it.

Maybe people aren't so different.

Romeo is still convinced he's a lap snake... and honestly, I'm not about to argue with him.

Where to Find Me

If you ever wonder where to find me...

Start by looking for the water.

It's always been where my heart grows quiet.

The world moves a little slower there.

The air feels lighter.

The noise fades.

I remember who I am.

Water has never asked me to be anything other than myself.

Maybe that's why I built this place beside its edge.

Because everyone deserves somewhere they can finally breathe.

Some people find themselves in the mountains.

I found myself beside the water.

Why Misery's Madame

People sometimes ask why I chose the name Misery's Madame.

The answer is simple.

Misery is not who I am.

Misery is where I've been.

It is every burden I carried so someone else could stand a little taller.

Every tear I hid so another person could smile.

Every piece of myself I quietly gave away while trying to hold everyone else together.

Misery is part of life.

Every one of us will meet it.

But we are not meant to let it define us.

We are allowed to rest.

We are allowed to heal.

We are allowed to become ourselves again.

That's what Misery's Madame has always been.

Not a place to celebrate suffering...

A place to remember that hope still exists.

If you've made it this far...

Thank you.

Thank you for spending a little time beside the water with me.

I hope you leave here carrying a little less than you brought with you.

I hope you remember that even on the hardest days...

There is still beauty to be found.

There is still hope.

And there is always a place where you are welcome.

Whether this is your first visit...

Or your hundredth...

The lantern will be burning.

The water will be waiting.

And there will always be a place for you beside the fire.

Welcome home.

Until our paths cross again...

With love,

Candy

The Madame

Leave your burdens at the water's edge. The crows know what to do with them.
